MY (WEST HIGHLAND) WAY

my earliest series. in october 1997 i went to scotland to find relief over a love gone wrong — a spontaneous solo trip, documented in photographs and a handwritten travel diary. the plan, settled on after an hour at the map shelf of a glasgow bookshop, was to hike the west highland way. a stiff neck, an overloaded backpack, and the realization that i had come to scotland precisely to leave stress behind ended the hike at crianlarich — where, in the tearoom of the railway station, my diary records the vow to return better prepared. instead the journey continued its own way: by train towards fort william, on to inverness, and with a chance travel companion by bus to thurso and john o'groats, to see the last house of scotland. shot on the olympus mju-ii — the compact camera i used at the time, as a writer, to photograph my trains.
